Fresh waste lagoon plans spark concern in village

More than 40 people living near a set of recycling pits in Seething have renewed their objections after a fresh bid was lodged to continue using the waste pools.

White's Recycling is seeking permission from Norfolk County Council to carry on using three lagoons to store organic liquid waste off Upgate Road.

Fears raised included strong odours, noise, flies, and the impact of increased HGV traffic traveling to and from the rural site.

This is the company's third attempt to secure permission for the lagoons, which together hold the equivalent of 11 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Two previous applications were rejected, including one dismissed last year, following long-running complaints from villagers.

One objector said: "As a resident of Seething, I strongly object to this further retrospective application for the use of three lagoons to store organic liquid waste.

"The location of the application site is far too close to Seething village, most of which is within a conservation area and exposed to the elements with gardens open to fields.

Another objector said: "Nothing has changed since White's two previous retrospective planning applications, the first of which generated 120 local objections.

"There will doubtless be far fewer on this occasion because local residents feel completely demoralised and powerless in this process - White's are cynically depending on weariness to give the illusion that residents are more accepting of their proposal."

However, Whites Recycling argues the lagoons have been around for 40 years and believes the right to operate them has become lawful "through the passage of time".

In its new planning application, the company said it had "decided to submit this application in good faith".

Public consultation on the latest bid is due to close next week.
