Despite her appeal, former UEA medical student Yasin Khan was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving.

Khan, 23, was driving a Volkswagen Golf when it was involved in a crash with 38-year-old cyclist Ben Steward on the A140 at Guardian Road, close to Earlham Cemetery.

Emergency services attended but Mr Steward, of Godric Place, Norwich, died at the scene in February 2023 having suffered multiple injuries.

Khan, who had been studying for a medical degree at the University of East Anglia at the time of the fatal crash, had previously admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

Before he was jailed for four-and-a-half years at Norwich Crown Court on Friday (September 11) a tearful Khan, who admitted causing the death of a cyclist, made a tearful apology to the victim's family from the witness box.

Khan, who was wearing a black suit, described how he quit his medical studies over the "guilt" he felt following the fatal crash.

"I will carry the consequences of that evening with me for the rest of my life and will never forget the human cost of the decisions I made," he said.

He told the family of Mr Steward he wanted to express his "deepest remorse" to them adding that he "fully accepted responsibility for what happened".

The defendant, of Rowantree Road, Newcastle, said nothing he could say or do could "repair" the damage that had been caused.

"I'm truly sorry for my actions," said Khan who revealed he quit his medical studies at the UEA over the "guilt" he felt.

"A decision lasting only moments can have consequences lasting a lifetime."
