A man of warmth, humour and determination, Milo was a skilled mechanic and motorsport enthusiast whose work opened the door to extraordinary experiences around the world.

But despite the adventures his career brought, he was at his happiest surrounded by family and friends, enjoying the simple pleasures of a barbecue, a beer in the garden and plenty of laughter.

Born in Dublin on March 31, 1960, Milo Joseph Long was the eldest of four children of Ella and Michael Long, and grew up alongside his younger siblings Sharon, Martin and Ciara.

Family was always important to Milo. He was close to his brothers and sister and, with his mischievous sense of humour, was never above tormenting them.

But behind the jokes was a fiercely protective older brother who always looked out for them.

Milo attended Drimnagh Castle School in Dublin and developed his strong work ethic from an early age.

At around 14, he began working at the Irish supermarket chain Superquinn, collecting trolleys and helping in the store. He was delighted to have money of his own and, outside work, enjoyed football and was part of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA).

He left school early to begin an apprenticeship with British Leyland, although his parents insisted he complete his Leaving Certificate, determined that their son should have every opportunity.
