New 'odour suppression system' to bring relief for hundreds from pungent pong

The first phase of the £500,000 scheme at Anglian Water’s Whitlingham Water Recycling Centre, on the edge of Norwich has been switched on.

Campaigners hope it will help bring an end to the pungent pong, dubbed the 'Whitlingham Whiff', which often wafts across Norwich and particularly Thorpe St Andrew.

The Whitlingham plant, off the A47, processes wastewater from across Norwich and Norfolk, including sewage and surface water.

It has long been associated with unpleasant odours, including from the production of 'sludge cakes' by removing water from waste, for use as fertiliser.
