India-US trade deal has hit a ‘plateau’, says Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
India-US trade negotiations remain active, but Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says the talks have reached a difficult “plateau”. Tariffs, market access, the US trade deficit and India’s Russian oil purchases remain among the biggest hurdles to a wider agreement.
India and the United States are still negotiating a wider trade agreement, but Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has indicated that the talks have reached a difficult stage. On October 5, she said negotiations had reached a “plateau”, suggesting that finding room for further concessions is becoming harder.
The latest comments come after more than a year and a half of negotiations, tariff disputes and an interim framework announced earlier this year. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said last week that an India-US agreement was “not imminent”, even after discussions with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
