Contact lens mistakes that cause eye infections: Habits to stop now

Sleeping in lenses, rinsing them in tap water and wearing them too long can lead to eye infections. Read on to find out the common contact lens mistakes to avoid, as pointed out by a doctor.

New Delhi: Contact lenses offer convenience and freedom from spectacles, making them a popular choice for people with refractive errors. However, improper handling, poor hygiene and wearing lenses for longer than recommended can increase the risk of eye infections. While many people may experience mild irritation or dryness, certain infections can affect the cornea, the transparent front surface of the eye, and potentially threaten vision if not treated promptly.

One of the serious complications associated with contact lens use is microbial keratitis, an infection of the cornea caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites. The risk increases when lenses are not cleaned, stored or worn correctly. Many of these complications can be prevented by following basic contact lens hygiene practices.

Sleeping with contact lenses

One of the most common mistakes is sleeping while wearing contact lenses, even when it is unintentional. Keeping lenses in the eyes overnight can reduce the oxygen supply to the cornea and increase the risk of infection. The lenses may also trap microorganisms against the eye, making it easier for them to cause damage.

Unless specifically prescribed for overnight use, contact lenses should be removed before sleeping. Even lenses approved for extended wear carry risks and should be used only under an eye specialist’s guidance.
