SP, TMC stands with AAP in Delhi, should Congress brace for jolt in UP and Bengal?

New Delhi: In the end they had to make a choice. And they did. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Samajwadi Party (SP), the two key constituents of the anti-BJP INDIA-bloc, on Wednesday announced their unconditional support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections. The two heavyweight regional parties from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh believe that the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is better placed to keep their common enemy BJP out of power in the national capital and not Congress. And although, both the TMC and SP have a limited support base in Delhi, their support sends across a larger message to the anti-BJP electorate that they should opt for AAP rather than Congress, despite the latter being the unofficial leader of the INDIA bloc.

Why did SP support AAP in Delhi and not Congress? According to SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav, it was decided during the initial phase of INDIA formation that the bloc will extend support to the regional parties wherever they were strong and in position to take on the BJP. “The question is not about the Congress or AAP.
