Sikhs of Delhi back BJP, time for Sikhs of Punjab to rethink?
New Delhi: There are about 9-10 lakh Sikh voters in the national capital with their concentration ranging from 55,000 to 4000 across the 70 assembly constituencies. The Rajouri Garden and Tilak Nagar assembly constituencies have the highest sikh voters – around 55,000, giving the community a distinctive edge. The BJP has won both these seats. Over all, there are ten seats in the sikh cluster of West Delhi and neighbouring areas and BJP has either won or has a comfortable lead in seven of these. Apart from Rajouri Garden and Tilak Nagar, the constituencies with sizable sikh voters include Moti Nagar, Hari Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Vikas Puri, Kalkaji, GTB Nagar, Rajinder Nagar and Jangpura.
And while, the Sikhs may constitute only about five per cent (10 lakhs) of the 2 crore Delhi population, the community is known to exercise much more political clout than their number, especially because they are known to vote en bloc for a party. Since, the elections in Delhi, unlike in UP or Bihar, are decided on the basis of narrow margins, Sikhs votes gain further importance.........
