Opposition intensifies pressure on ECI: Time for transparency to restore credibility?

New Delhi: A day after Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav commented that Election Commision of India (ECI) is dead and should be given the shroud for burial, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had cast serious apprehensions about the impartiality of the ECI and alleged that the Maharashtra assembly elections held last year were rigged by the addition of lakhs of bogus voters.

Addressing a press conference with NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut in Delhi today, Gandhi alleged that the ECI added more voters in Maharashtra (39 lakhs) in 5 months between 2024 Lok Sabha elections and 2024 Assembly elections than in the 5 years between the 2019 Assembly elections and 2024 Lok Sabha elections (32 lakhs).

To stress his point, Gandhi gave an example of Kamathi assembly constituency in Nagpur district which was won by BJP in the last assembly elections. Here Congress votes remained constant between 2024 Lok Sabha and 2024 Assembly elections but the BJP’s victory margin (in Assembly elections) is almost equal to the number of new voters added in the list (35,000) between Lok Sabha 2024 and........
