Eight security officials and a driver were killed after the police truck they were travelling in was blown away in the IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blast triggered by the Maoists in the Kutru jungle area of the Bijapur district (Bastar division) of Chhattisgarh on Monday afternoon. According to Sundarraj Pattilingam, Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range), the attack took place about 75 kilometres from Bijapur on the Kutru-Bedre route when the Dantewada District Reserve Guard (DRG) was returning after an operation in the region.
The security forces had eliminated five Naxal militants in an encounter in the Abujmarh region of Chhattisgarh on Saturday. According to experts, it is not uncommon for Maoists to attack security officials and catch them off guard when returning tired and hungry after undertaking an operation for days in the treacherous terrain.
