Passwords and secret keys from banks and governments exposed on popular code sites
New Delhi: Banks, government agencies, and other big technology firms passwords, security keys, and confidential data were all left exposed on the internet by two popular code formatting websites: JSONFormatter and CodeBeautify. Security researchers discovered that there were over 80,000 saved pieces of code, or over 5GB of data, that anyone could obtain over a five-year period through an unprotected feature of the site, Recent Links.
Active login credentials, private encryption keys, and sensitive data on the customers were stored in the cache of key industries such as finance, healthcare, aerospace, and cybersecurity. Researchers claim that the revealed information is an extreme threat since most of the credentials were still valid when they were found.
