India’s BRICS rise: From 2012 slowdown fears to 7.8% GDP growth in 2026
India’s position in BRICS has changed sharply since 2012, when weak growth and rating concerns raised doubts over its place in the grouping. As India hosts BRICS in 2026, faster GDP growth, an improved sovereign rating and greater diplomatic weight have changed the conversation.
New Delhi: India is preparing to host the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, 2026, at a time when its position inside the grouping looks very different from the doubts that surrounded it more than a decade ago. Leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are expected to attend the summit.
