India can flex its muscles on US trade deal, and it must

US is an important export market for corporate India, but the Indian consumer market has the ability to influence US tech profitability and potentially, its survival. In the world of negotiations, that’s fair play.

On July 15, India and the United Kingdom will turn the page on a new chapter of trade. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), commonly referred to as the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), comes into effect after years of negotiations. This deal will open doors for India’s exporters, Indian professionals, as well as manufacturers and investors from the UK to sell more to Indian consumers.

The India-UK FTA is a moment worth celebrating. Not just because another FTA comes into being, but because it reflects how India now negotiates and plays to win. Agreements with UAE, Australia, EFTA (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland & Liechtenstein), New Zealand and now the UK, along with ‘the mother of all deals’ – the India-EU FTA all show how India has become a more confident negotiator.
