Shillong: A mangalsutra left behind in a hotel room became the biggest clue that helped Meghalaya Police uncover the murder of a newlywed man, Raja Raghuvanshi, during what was supposed to be his honeymoon.

Raja and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi had reached Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya just days after their wedding. On May 23, the couple mysteriously vanished from their homestay. The next day on June 2, Raja’s body was found in a deep gorge. However, there was no trace of Sonam, until June 9, when she suddenly surfaced in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, with a strange story.

But the key to the mystery lay back in the hotel room. While investigating their disappearance, police found Sonam’s mangalsutra and a ring left in the couple’s suitcase. “It was the first thing that made us suspicious,” Deputy inspector general DNR Marak told NDTV. “A married woman usually never leaves her mangalsutra behind, especially during a honeymoon,” he said.

Police soon started digging deeper. Sonam, who claimed she was kidnapped and drugged, was arrested........
