Trump threatens Guantanamo Bay for 'worst criminal aliens'; bold move or sheer hubris?

New Delhi: The President of the United States has been a busy man ever since his glamourous inauguration on January 20, he has been signing executive orders, making important phone calls, has already scheduled his first official visits, has firmed up the guests who will come calling at the White House… the list is endless. So, when he signed the Laken Riley Act and brought it to law, on Wednesday, it came as no surprise. The Act gives federal authorities all discretionary powers to deport illegal immigrants in the US who have been accused of crimes. During a ceremony that Trump was attending, he also announced his upcoming “bold move.” The POTUS declared that his administration had planned to send the “worst criminal aliens” to a detention center in the Guantanamo Bay situated in Cuba.

Before we dive deeper into the Guantanamo’s dark past and write about why the quietude maintained by human welfare activists is problematic, it’s important to recall the Riley case which led to the bipartisan law in the first place. The first piece of legislation on the Riley Act was approved during Trump’s second term. It was named after Riley, a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student.

Riley’s body was found severely brutalised, with her skull bashed in with a stone. Information received from her smartwatch revealed that Riley had struggled for life for minutes after having been attacked mercilessly. The perpetrator, José Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan man who had entered the United States illegally.
