Optional Subject: Is Shashi Tharoor suddenly ambitious; will that cost the Congress in Kerala?

New Delhi: First, he sang praises of the ruling Kerala government’s astute politics that, according him, has benefitted the economics of the state to a great extent. Second, he also complimented prime minister Narendra Modi upon his successful meeting with the newly elected president of the United States, Donald Trump. Third, his response to media reports that the Congress party is miffed with his sudden appreciation for the opposite camp was filled with innuendos. Tharoor is suddenly speaking of alternate choices, call it “options” if you may, but these sentences are suggestive of a possibility of a switch. At least that must be something weighing on the politician’s mind? Although, Tharoor has time and again refuted these claims as baseless, he has not minced his words calling out the Congress for their “narrow-minded” politics.

What is really going on in Kerala then? Is the MP from Thiruvananthapuram just being gracious in showring appreciation on his competitors? Or is Tharoor making his ambition known? More significantly, how is the Congress going to react to such a mood swing. Considering assembly elections in the state is only a year away, to be held in 2026, Tharoor’s timing doesn’t seem wide off the mark.

It all started with a cryptic tweet when Tharoor quoted English poet Thomas Gray’s poem, ‘Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College’ on X. The tweet, “Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise…” could mean different things given the context of the upcoming elections........
