Is USAID ‘Biggest Scam’: Case for transparency, and why India’s concerns are valid
New Delhi: Elon Musk has just thrown a googly and it’s baffling for all sides in the game. For one, it is not a ‘smart’ ball and neither is Musk a left-arm leg spinner who knows anything about the sport or the rules which maketh it. So, when he, as the DOGE captain, claimed that the US is mulling to cancel $21 million in funds meant to influence voter turnout in India, the news came as a shocker. No sooner had Musk raised his objections against this “humanitarian aid” being provided to India, he also claimed similar amounts for Bangladesh and Nepal, his statement was met with strong disapproval. Indian politicians have claimed they were in the dark with respect to such a deal being made and sanctioned in the first place, the Election Commission of India has flipped-flopped in its stance, but overall there is a lot of confusion about this USAID in question.
If it was indeed made available to India, where did the funds go and was it utilised in some wrong way to encourage voter behaviour to suit a particular political party? The BJP has already ordered a staunch investigation into the controversy, even calling out the agency for being the “biggest scam in human history.”
