Dunki Routes and Darién Gap: Is US-Panama diplomacy holding back a crackdown?

New Delhi: So, the US has identified the Darién Gap to be the entry point of all illegal immigrant infringement. And yet, every year, almost 70 per cent of all undocumented immigrants in the States are known to have traversed this difficult path. The information, not classified, has been arrived at with much Intelligence inputting. But why then is the US not actively pursuing a means to plug in this “gap” and halt the influx of illegal immigrants into their side of the border? People in the know of things say the reason is more political than it seems. While it was easy for the States to wield its power and keep Nicaragua at bay, they cannot do it with Panama.

Before we dive deeper into the politics of vested interest that is at play here, here’s a look at the numbers of illegal immigrants that the US is dealing with and why it poses a huge, imminent risk for them. Speaking strictly in terms of Indian undocumented migrants, in just four years, the number has surged dramatically — from 8,027 in the 2018–2019 period to 725,000 in 2022–2023, data from Pew Research Center showed.

With Donald Trump at the helm in the US, and his MAGA push driving most of his policy decisions, it is not surprising that they have started the deportation drive with a sense of urgency. In his deportation campaign, India also made it to the notorious list with almost 378 people having been sent back home in military planes until now, the number, we hear, could be more in the coming days.
