Onion prices surge nearly 60%: Govt dispatches dedicated rakes to increase supply

The all-India average retail price of onion jumped 59% year-on-year to Rs 43.53 a kg on August 24, from Rs 27.37 a kg a year ago. The average wholesale price was up 68% at Rs 35.58 a kg, against Rs 21.23 a kg in the year-ago period.

Kolkata: Onion prices are bringing tears to households all over the country. Prices have surged as high as 60%. To quell the price rise, the government has begun supplying onions to the markets with the help of dedicated trains referred to as Kanda express.
