New Delhi: As India marks its 80th Independence Day, the familiar language of freedom – liberty, self-rule and the right to determine our own destiny- invites a less familiar question: What does freedom mean when nobody is watching? From political freedom to personal responsibility
India’s independence on August 15, 1947, ended nearly two centuries of British colonial rule and transferred political sovereignty to Indians. The achievement gave the country the fundamental freedom to shape its own institutions, laws and future.
But political independence did not automatically resolve the harder questions of individual and collective conduct. A free society still has to contend with dishonesty, exploitation, intolerance, indiscipline and the tension between personal choice and social responsibility.
