New Delhi: Janmashtami fasting does not end with simply sitting down for a regular meal. For devotees who observe the vrat with religious discipline, the way the fast is opened is also considered part of the observance. After completing the midnight worship of Lord Krishna, the first food should be taken with the same sense of devotion with which the fast was kept.

The traditional approach is simple. Complete the Janmashtami puja, accept the bhog offered to Lord Krishna as prasad, and then begin with fresh fruit. Regular food should follow only after this.

How to break Janmashtami fast

The vrat can be opened in a few simple steps:

Complete the midnight Krishna puja

Janmashtami worship is traditionally performed around midnight, when devotees celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Complete the puja, offer prayers and receive the deity’s bhog as prasad.

Many devotees also sing bhajans or recite Krishna’s names during the birth celebration.
