New Delhi: For millions of women who have spent years being told they have “polycystic ovaries”, a seemingly small change in medical terminology could signal a much bigger shift in how the condition is understood. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has highlighted the renaming of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), bringing renewed attention in India to a global medical consensus that aims to move the focus beyond the ovaries and towards the disorder’s wider hormonal and metabolic effects.

Why PCOS was considered misleading name

The term “polycystic” has long created the impression that ovarian cysts are the defining feature of the disorder. Medical experts say this is misleading. The ovarian appearance associated with PCOS often represents numerous small follicles rather than conventional pathological cysts, and not every affected woman has this ovarian appearance.
