Celebrity postpartum fitness vs real recovery: Doctor warns why new moms shouldn’t race against clock

Celebrity moms may appear to bounce back quickly after childbirth, but doctors say postpartum recovery is not a race. Here’s why new mothers should prioritise healing, nutrition, mental health and gradual exercise over unrealistic body expectations.

New Delhi: New mothers are increasingly being exposed to images of celebrities returning to toned physiques and demanding fitness routines soon after childbirth. But Dr Swati Rai, Consultant Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Motherhood Hospital, Sector 48, Noida, in an interview with News9 Live, says such images can create unrealistic expectations at a time when a woman’s body needs patience, nutrition and recovery.

“The goal after childbirth should never be to ‘bounce back’. It should be to move forward with strength and confidence. Every woman’s recovery timeline is different, and there is no deadline to regain fitness,” says Dr Rai.

The postpartum period is a major phase of physical and emotional adjustment. The uterus contracts back towards its pre-pregnancy size, pregnancy-related hormonal changes continue to settle, and tissues and muscles affected by pregnancy and childbirth gradually recover. Recovery can vary significantly depending on whether the birth was vaginal or by Caesarean section, as well as on complications, overall health and individual circumstances.

The World Health Organization describes the first six weeks after childbirth as a critical period for postnatal care and recommends support for women’s physical and mental health, nutrition, breastfeeding and recovery during this time.
