French, the Republican nominee for the powerful Texas Railroad Commission, shared a photograph of students celebrating after the University of Texas Longhorns defeated Ohio State. He appeared to focus on the presence of Asian and South Asian students in the crowd, linking their presence to what he described as the displacement of Americans at Texas institutions.

The post has triggered condemnation from several senior Republicans, including US Senator John Cornyn, and has reopened scrutiny of French’s history of controversial comments about Muslims, immigrants and other minority groups.
