US revokes citizenship of Indian-origin man Gurmeet Singh 15 years after rape case

Singh first entered the US in February 1992 as a visitor and later obtained permanent residency in June 2000 through a family-based immigrant visa petition. A federal court found that he had concealed the offence during the naturalisation process.

New Delhi: An Indian-origin man convicted of kidnapping and raping a female passenger in New York has lost his US citizenship nearly 15 years after the crime, after a federal court found that he had concealed the offence during the naturalisation process.

Gurmeet Singh, 55, was convicted in 2014 and sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2011 attack. The US Justice Department said Singh obtained citizenship on October 19, 2011, just months after the assault, while concealing the crime from immigration authorities.
