US judge halts Trump’s latest push to restrict birthright citizenship

On his first day back in office in January 2025, Trump signed an executive order seeking to end automatic citizenship for certain children born in the US.

New Delhi: A US federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from enforcing its latest attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, dealing another blow to the president’s long-running push to curb automatic citizenship for children born in the United States.

Major intervention from court

US District Judge Deborah Boardman issued a preliminary injunction against the new executive order, which was signed by Trump in August and specifically sought to target so-called ‘birth tourism’ and broaden the circumstances under which US-born children could be denied citizenship.
