Turkey’s Parliament backs PKK peace bill in attempts to reconcile with Kurds

New Delhi: Turkey has taken a significant step towards ending its decades-long conflict with Kurdish militants, with a parliamentary committee approving a bill aimed at providing a legal framework for the country’s renewed peace process with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The 12-article legislation, titled the ‘Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration’ bill, provides for procedures governing PKK disarmament and the rehabilitation of some former militants.

The move comes after the PKK announced its decision to disband and end its armed struggle as part of a renewed peace initiative. The conflict, which began in its current form in 1984, has killed more than 40,000 people and repeatedly spilled across........
