New world order: Will Donald Trump bring in multipolarity, breaking Western hegemony?

New Delhi: This one was not just for the cameras. In a landmark meeting, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump, their first meeting after Trump’s re-election to the White House. From trade and tariffs to security and energy, a lot was discussed on how to take bilateral ties between the two countries forward. The meeting was significant on many levels, PM Modi became one of the first foreign leaders to meet Trump after his reelection, at a time when he has been signing significant executive orders left and right. While many important declarations were made in the meeting, other things running parallel also were significant to it. The contours of global politics have been on the move for some time now, and Trump’s re-entry into the fray seems to be the final nudge that might create new geopolitical realities.

The meeting between PM Modi and Donald Trump was highly anticipated and lived up to the expectations. Trump greeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly, referring to him as a “great friend” for many years while Modi acknowledged Trump’s absence, saying, “We missed you a lot”.

It was not just friendly rhetoric, but substantial on-ground gains were also made during the meeting. Following their meeting, Trump announced that India has agreed to import more oil and gas from the United States. “We have some very big things to talk about; they (India) are going to be purchasing a lot of our oil and gas (from the US). We have more oil and gas than any other country in the world and they (India) need it, and we have it,” Trump said.
