Elon Musk’s rift with US bureaucracy widens, call for reform or cause to rebuke?

New Delhi: Government workers in the US currently find themselves in a state of extreme worry and confusion. This comes after Elon Musk’s demand that federal employees explain their recent accomplishments by the end of Monday or risk getting fired. Musk, heading The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), under Donald Trump’s Presidency has been mandated by the President re-elect to manage government funds and ‘efficiency’.

In his new role, the tech billionaire is now going after US government officials, questioning whether they actually do any substantial work or are their roles mere demonstrative. While the role and need of government officials has often come under questioning in recent times, the question is how to deal with the issue. Is Musk-like exuberance the only way to bring in reforms in bureaucracy or do better, more slow and judicious ways, exist as well.

Musk’s pronouncements have caused a lot of confusion. It all started with an e-mail titled ‘What did you do last week’, wherein Elon Musk asked US federal employees to summarise their weekly tasks and respond by Monday.

The mail was sent from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on Saturday and instructed recipients to reply with five examples of what they did over the past seven days, without revealing any classified information.
