Bangladesh sees ‘no risk’ in joining Mecca Pact, says move won’t affect other ties

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey are scheduled to meet in Istanbul on August 31 for the first meeting of the Mecca pact’s Strategic Political and Defence Committee. Bangladesh has so far not received a formal invitation to join the pact.

New Delhi: Bangladesh has said it sees ‘no risk’ in joining the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, arguing that participation in the pact would not prevent Dhaka from maintaining ties with other countries.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir said on Sunday that Bangladesh was discussing the possibility of joining the agreement and that the talks were progressing positively. “This is a unique pact that presents new opportunities,” Kabir said after meeting Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdullah Zafer bin Abiyah.
