Indian scientists uncover origin of titanium-rich Moon Dust

Scientists from IIT KGP and PRL have traced the origin of titanium in lunar basalts. For the study, the researchers recreated the conditions in the interior of the Moon, in a lab in Kharagpur.

New Delhi: Scientists from IIT Kharagpur and the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) have successfully simulated the extreme conditions of the lunar interior to solve a long-standing mystery, one of how the Moon produced its unique titanium-rich volcanic rocks. The study, published in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, utilised high-pressure ‘piston-cylinder’ experiments at IIT Kharagpur to mimic the lunar mantle at depths between 200 and 700 kilometres.
