IIT Guwahati researchers develop nuclear-resistant mortar

Scientists from IIT Guwahati have developed cement mortar resistant to radiation. The advancement can lead to safer nuclear facilities.

New Delhi: Scientists from IIT Guwahati have developed a method to fortify cement mortar, make it more durable, and better at blocking radiation harmful to humans. The goal of the research is to make nuclear facilities safer. The approach focuses on improving the material properties of the mortar so that it can perform as both a structural component as well as a shielding barrier against radiation. The researchers modified the composition of the cement mortar to enhance its durability and density, which are the important parameters when it comes to limiting the penetration of radiation.

The researchers were able to determine that the concrete made using the enhanced mortar is capable of reducing the........
