Haridwar launches mega clean-up after Kanwar Yatra leaves 7,000 tonnes of waste
Haridwar has launched a large-scale cleanliness drive after nearly 48 million Kanwar pilgrims generated about 7,000 tonnes of waste during the two-week pilgrimage. More than 1,100 sanitation workers and 80 vehicles have been deployed as experts warn that garbage could pollute the Ganga and raise the risk of disease.
New Delhi: Haridwar authorities have started a large-scale operation to remove more than 7,000 tonnes of garbage generated during the two-week Kanwar Yatra. Nearly 48 million pilgrims visited the holy city this year, the highest number recorded so far.
Plastic, discarded clothes, Kanwars and non-degradable polythene remain scattered across the city. Ganga ghats, markets, parking areas and roads connecting Haridwar with national highways are among the worst-affected places.
