Opinion | How PM Modi Mainstreamed The Northeast
Over the past decade, the Northeast has seen its railway map redrawn at an unprecedented pace. Long-pending projects have moved from survey sheets to reality, with new stations opening in states that had none for over a century and capitals finally being connected to the national network. The phenomenal growth Assam charted in the last eleven years received a massive boost with the inauguration and foundation laying of a series of projects by PM Modi on September 14, 2025. For instance, the Kuruwa–Narengi Bridge over the River Brahmaputra and the Guwahati Ring Road projects will make travel and transport seamless, while the Polypropylene and Bioethanol Plants will revolutionise the industrial sector, opening job opportunities for the youth.
Modi also visited Mizoram’s Aizawl on September 13, 2025 and inaugurated multiple development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore. This includes the Bairabi-Sairang New Rail line, which will connect Aizawl to the “Indian Railways network for the first time". Later in the day, he visited Manipur’s Churachandpur, where he laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore.
Speaking of Manipur specifically, thanks to PM Modi’s dynamic leadership, 8 lakh farmer families in Manipur are getting hundreds of crores of rupees under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana; 7 lakh families are getting benefits under PM Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY); 90,000 houses have been built under PM Awas Yojana (PMAY); free medical treatment has been given to 5.25 lakh patients under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana (PM-JAY) in Manipur; over 2.5 lakh free gas connections and over 2.3 lakh free electricity connections have been provided in Manipur; 40,000 toilets have been built; Oxygen plants which were built during Covid in virtually every district of Manipur. These are a testament to how relevant Manipur has been to the Modi government, in the larger scheme of things.
Don’t forget that the Congress never ever mainstreamed Manipur, which continued to suffer from “tyranny of distance" under decades of Congress misrule. Modi changed that. That Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the Northeast more than 50 times and Modi’s Cabinet ministers have visited this region over 400 times in the last eleven years, is a testimony to the fact that PM Modi never allowed the “tyranny of distance", to prevent his government from working for the welfare of the Northeast. Also, don’t........
