Opinion | From Article 370 To Naxalism: Four Feathers In Amit Shah’s Cap, And Counting

From Article 370 to Waqf reforms and the push against Naxalism, a look at the key milestones that have defined Amit Shah’s tenure as Home Minister.

Amit Shah’s stint as Home Minister has been historic, to say the least. He has fulfilled almost all the stated and unstated objectives of the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS. First, Article 370 of the Constitution, which made an invidious distinction in favour of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, was amended in 2019 to bring about parity with other states. On 5 August 2019, when Shah introduced the Bill in Parliament, the opposition was shell-shocked. Its protest was fairly muted.

On 22 January 2024, when Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Ram Mandir at Bhagwan Ram’s birthplace, Ayodhya, it was a fulfilment of a long-repressed desire of the Hindus. Though it was facilitated by a favourable Supreme Court verdict in favour of the Hindus, a great deal of meticulous planning and implementation went into the actual construction of the temple, in which Amit Shah played an effective and unobtrusive role. The third article of faith, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), is a work in progress.
