Listen Without Prejudice: While Jantar Mantar Has Been Heard, Janta's Mantra Is Accountability

Governments should never fear accountability. Accountability does not weaken governments. It strengthens them. It restores trust.

“You are not talking to the Prime Minister of India, you are talking to a friend."

On Feb 16, 2018, the Prime Minister began his first dialogue with students, opening the session with these words of assurance. The setting for Pariksha Pe Charcha was the cavernous Talkatora Stadium. The lengthy dialogue was a welcome exercise in taking the government to the future of Bharat. The interaction served one purpose: to hear the students’ deepest anxieties over taking make-or-break examinations and spell out mantras to help them face exams without stress.

Of course, “dost Modi" was the perfect person to hear from. After all, he came from that class of Indians who place all their faith in their only calling card in life: hard work. Modi’s entire politics is centred on ensuring that India evolves into a meritocracy where only talent, working in tandem with exemplary work ethic, is rewarded. One of the greatest threats to meritocracy, and one which naturally induces the greatest stress among deserving, hard-working, honest students, is a system that rewards the shortcut.
