Opinion: Muslims Must Decide If They Want To Keep Opposing BJP En Bloc Or Engage With It

It is time for Muslims to introspect and act instead of habitually blaming everyone around

The BJP contested 515 seats across five states in the 2026 Assembly elections. There was not a single Muslim candidate.

Many may view it as a failure of representation for India’s second largest religious majority, but in effect it is a blunt, unsweetened message to the community: If you continue to vote en bloc against the party election after election, the party does not have any obligation to take you along.

While BJP governments may continue to extend benefits to the community — as it does disproportionately (25-35 per cent) in housing, LPG, health insurance, free ration, and toilet schemes in states like UP — the party has made it clear that it couldn’t care less.

Lokniti-CSDS estimated that about 8 per cent Muslims voted for the BJP in the 2024 general elections; Axis My India put it at 6-9 per cent; and by the BJP’s own estimation, only 1-4 per cent voted for it. To top it, there has been strategic voting by Muslims against the BJP in most elections.
