The Issue: Mayor Mamdani’s list of city residents who might be subjected to his pied-à-terre tax.
The pied-à-terre tax foolishness by Mayor Mamdani that includes harassing thousands of New Yorkers who have to prove the city is their primary residence shouldn’t be a surprise (“Zo dismisses target practice,” July 30).
What everyone seems to be overlooking is that many of the rich people that Mamdani wants to overtax occupy regulated apartments at below-market, protected rents. The buildings in which these apartments are located would be worth more and thus would pay higher taxes if those apartments were not regulated.
The unnecessary pied-à-terre tax might not be needed if politicians like the mayor didn’t use rent regulation as a tool to get elected.
