The curious case of Newsom’s missing mirror

Gavin Newsom doesn’t seem to own a mirror.

Anytime he (verbally) addresses one of California’s many challenges, the predicament is someone else’s fault.

Newsom should stand up and shoulder responsibility for the crises that have emerged or worsened on his watch, and offer concrete solutions.

Instead, he doles out blame.

On Monday, for instance, Newsom rebuked a list of counties –– including the one named LA –– for failing to furnish a homelessness “paradigm shift” the governor had promised in 2022.

Turns out, the CARE court program, meant to help families push mentally ill loved ones into treatment, has failed to meet expectations.

The problem? Not Newsom, who announced on Monday a taxpayer cash infusion of $291 million (atop the $300 million already spent on it) and said:

“Local leaders have a moral and legal obligation to deliver this transformational tool for those who need it most. We will not accept failure and excuses when lives are on the line.”

The governor’s finger-pointing hardly stops there.

He’s got an entire catalog –– enough to fill Volume II of his memoir.

Poor fire preparedness? That wasn’t me, that was climate change.

Slow fire recovery? Donald Trump and the feds haven’t sent enough money.

Lack of affordable housing? Local governments (especially those Republicans in Huntington Beach) resist state home-building decrees.

Fraud in California? We cracked down; nothing to see here; the feds are playing politics.

High energy costs? Energy companies, natch.

High gas prices? Not state climate policies, but the greed of Big Oil.

Sluggish state economy? Trump, tariffs, and all other things Trump.

It’s all a game to get the wannabe prez on record as Doing Something, even if that something is actually nothing.

Then, as the 2028 presidential campaign grows near, we’ll hear him say, in effect:

“I worked to get something done, and tried to get others to act, but (add name of culpable party here) prevented the success of my brilliant plan that totally would have worked.”

No word yet on who’s to blame for a lack of reflective glass in the governor’s mansion.
