Sophie Cunningham puts up an airball in ripping LA

“I love LA!” sang Randy Newman with verve, heart, and a bit of cheek.

Sophie Cunningham does not share the sentiment.

The WNBA sharpshooter tossed an airball this week when she ripped the city — on TikTok, of course — as full of bland, mirthless, phony, phone-addicted people of uniform appearance.

“People don’t dance, people don’t even say hi, they have no personalities,” the blond beauty said after attending the NBA’s All Star Weekend festivities here. “They have no personalities and they all look the same.”

She then went on to rip Angelenos for talking on the phone rather than in person, as she spoke to a camera.

It was a hot take that flew far wide of the rim.

Any city of 4 million people is bound to have some staid, impolite, phone-addled denizens.

But LA’s also full of spunk, grit, wit, and ingenuity. And reports have it that at least a few dancers reside here.

Granted, we do face challenges, from crime to fraud to failed leadership on issues ranging from a decrepit MacArthur Park to the Palisades Fire response and recovery. 

Even so, this is a great city with a bright, sunny future.

It’s among the most dynamic and diverse places in the world, with a dizzying array of quirks and styles and people and neighborhoods.

It’s home to Hollywood glamour, Pacific sunsets, the Silicon Beach tech hub, and two of the most storied franchises in pro sports: the Lakers and the Dodgers.

It’s replete with amazing, varied — in some cases, world-class — art, food and medicine. 

It will host the World Cup this year and the Summer Olympics in 2028.

And Cunningham, now a guard/forward with the Indiana Fever, owes her fame to a league that includes the LA Sparks. (Soon, the WNBA will expand to three more cities the sharpshooter slammed in July as less-than-exciting: Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia.)
