Newsom preens and spins through Munich
If “preening abroad” were an Olympic event, Gavin Newsom would take the gold.
In Munich on Friday, the governor –– as if channeling a figure skater –– puffed out his chest, spun reality, and of course, trashed President Trump and then trashed him again.
He would have done better to stay home and focus on the state he was elected to govern.
Instead, he lectures Trump on a German stage.
While speaking on (a tedious echo chamber of) a climate panel, the wannabe prez unspooled a long program of insults, including:
“Donald Trump is doubling down on stupid.”
“Never in the history of the United States of America has there been a more destructive president than the current occupant in the White House.”
“He’s trying to recreate the 19th century.”
“He’s a wholly owned subsidiary of Big Oil, gas and coal.”
“It is Code Red in terms of American leadership in this (climate) space.”
“I hope, if there’s nothing else I communicate today, Donald Trump is temporary. He’ll be gone in three years. California is a stable and reliable partner in this space.”
“We’re all becoming Chamberlains in this place.” (Implication: Trump is Hitler.)
Whew. That was a long routine.
It seems obvious, but here we go: State officials should not peacock abroad for the purpose of undermining a sitting U.S. president.
The gov’s trashing of Trump on the world stage has been unseemly and counterproductive, and his efforts to position California as an alternative partner to the national government, silly.
In January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Newsom disparaged President Trump in crude terms to widespread ridicule.
In November at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Rio, he derided the U.S. president as an “invasive species” and a “wrecking ball president.”
We realize (again: obvious) that Newsom’s staging a prolonged audition for the presidency.
Indeed, other Dems who covet the White House –– including AOC, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly –– are also swanning around Munich.
But the California governor would appeal more broadly to the U.S. electorate if he actually improved life in California.
The list of untended issues is long, starting with chronic high rates of homelessness; a staggering lack of affordability; stubborn housing, water, energy and road-capacity shortages; abysmal public education outcomes; overtaxation — including an absurd proposed billionaire tax; woeful underperformance by state government; rampant fraud; widespread crime; and union and other special-interest capture of Sacramento.
What’s more, Newsom’s preening on California’s climate policies spun an alternate reality. He omitted, conveniently, their cost to Californians: high gas and energy prices; electricity shortages; high unemployment; and dependence on foreign oil.
Newsom’s priorities are inverted: virtually no progress (or worse) on issues of import to Californians, yet Olympian levels of gallivanting, and glad-handing, and grandstanding.
Our state deserves better.
But fortunately, Newsom, like Trump, is temporary.
