Akhilleus: A Defence Shield Orchestrating the Levantine Fortress

The Achilles Shield marks Greece’s ambition to build a stronger defence network with Israeli technology amid rising tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

On 31st August 2026, a missile deal was signed between close-knit partners, Greece and Israel. According to the deal, Israel will supply technology and defence systems, while Greece will pay €3 billion to Israel. Through this “Achilles’ shield” and partnerships with Cyprus, Egypt, and Sudan, Israel is establishing a “ring of fire” around Türkiye. A new triad of defence cooperation is emerging from the Eastern Mediterranean between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel.

Before discussing the geopolitical contest in the Eastern Mediterranean, we have to understand the Greek word “Achilles”. It is derived from Akhilleus, which means pain of the people. Before the birth of Achilles, a famous prophecy about him became known: “he would become the strongest warrior of his time but would bring grief for his enemies and also for his own people.” The prophecy became true: he became undefeated; he was like an unshakable pillar of strength for his enemies, but he sometimes avoided fighting for his country, which brought grief for his own people.

Likewise, this defence architecture is named the “Achilles shield”, as it will bring grief for the enemies, but unlike the warrior who sometimes brought misery for his state, the Greek government uses the name to symbolise a protective dome that keeps its own people safe from the grief of incoming airstrikes. In the myth, the Greek god forged a magnificent shield for Achilles that depicted entire civilisations, stars, and peaceful cities.

The Achilles shield will serve as the strongest defensive architecture of this era. It is an important development that happened in this crucial time. At a time when the Iran-Israel conflict and strained Israel-Türkiye relations are reshaping regional politics, this agreement is significant beyond military protection.
