If Jim and others are right that Trump has set the bar at regime change, what is the imagined successor regime?

Do we have an idea already? Or is this something we’re going to let the Iranians decide via a civil war?

If Trump is willing to stop short of regime change and merely punish and degrade the Iranian state, will he be able to keep those supporting him today on board or will they consider his stopping a betrayal, a squandering of opportunity?

Since Americans haven’t really been prepared for this engagement, what level of tolerance will they have for disruption — say, surging oil and gas prices as the Strait of Hormuz closes?

Trump’s foreign policy has always succeeded by means of doing what is unexpected, by spectacle, and by limiting the costs and sacrifices that Americans have to make to achieve it. How will that work out here?
