During Easter and Passover, heavily armed police officers were deployed to guard places of religious worship in Toronto. Those are not the traits of a high-trust society, and there are many more pointing to the further barbarization of our country.

Was it arson? The odds are far higher here in Canada than they are in most peer countries. Since the furor that followed the Kamloops unmarked graves report of 2021, at least 238 Canadian churches have been burned or damaged. This is a statistic befitting Nigeria or the Middle East, not Canada.
High-trust societies are ones where people can be confident that their church or synagogue will still be standing in the morning. They are societies in which many neighbourhoods can leave a door unlocked without worrying, or the kids’ bikes can lay in the front yard without fear of theft.
