After Idlout’s defection, the Liberals need only win two of three byelections set for April 13, with two of them being party-safe seats in the Greater Toronto Area. Barring a disaster, it is expected that the Liberals will handily retain both seats, securing their majority government that they did not win during the federal election.

This is surely a sombre week for federal Conservatives in Ottawa, toiling for years in Opposition, and robbed of an opportunity to vanquish Justin Trudeau by the arrival of Carney last year. However, for a generation of young Conservatives, there is an opportunity to make all these years mean something, far away from Ottawa, on the West Coast.
