Keep those elbows up, Canada
Austin, Texas may have sounded like a street party as the results came in last night, but even in Canada, if you listened closely enough, you could almost hear the collective sigh of relief. Nobody who was rooting for a win by the Democrats wanted to trust the polls or the predictions of a “blue wave” after the traumatic experiences of 2016 and 2024, and they — we — had seen Donald Trump escape political punishment too many times to believe it could actually happen. As Canadians, the feeling was particularly helpless, since our collective fate was once again subject to the outcome of an election we couldn’t control. And then, the wave started to hit.
We don’t yet know whether the Democrats will win senate seats in Alaska and, of all places, Mississippi. But we do know that they control the Senate, and will probably do so out through 2032 given how many Republican seats they flipped last night. We know they have the biggest majority in the House of Representatives in decades, bigger even than the Obama-driven one in 2008. And we know the next two years will be defined by investigations into the Trump administration’s smorgasbord of corruption and illegality, along with his own family’s attempt to evade the consequences.
MAGA is dead, and Donald Trump killed it.
Even so, Canada can’t afford to drop its guard — or its elbows. Harrison Lowman, the former managing editor of The Hub (now managing editor of Canadaland), poked at this question on social media, asking “so…..we still going full hog on the pivoting every single thing in Canada........
