Mulcair: At home and in the U.S., the environment takes a back seat

This has been a disastrous week for the environment. Leaders on both sides of the border seem to have reached the same conclusion: With so much political chaos dominating the headlines, it’s the perfect time to quietly dismantle environmental protections and climate policies.

The core principle of sustainable development is simple: Governments must consider the impact of today’s policies on tomorrow’s generations. Instead, what we’re getting looks like a mindset of grab what you can now and let the future fend for itself.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s moves are the least surprising. His new head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Lee Zeldin, has no expertise in the field. His only real qualification? He defended Trump during his first impeachment trial. Apparently, that’s enough. One of Zeldin’s first acts is to move to eliminate the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, dismissing it as “bureaucratic red tape” with no benefits for air quality.

But greenhouse gases aren’t primarily a question of air quality — they trap heat, fuelling global warming. Trump doesn’t believe climate change exists, calling it a “hoax,” so why track the........
