Even if there were American wine on the shelves at the Société des alcools du Québec, would any self-respecting Canadian seriously want to drink it right now?

No thanks. Not while the current narcissistic bully is still in the White House and wreaking economic havoc on our country.

Provincial bans on U.S. booze, like the one imposed by Quebec in March 2025, may be one of the “justifications” for the latest round of punishing tariffs U.S. President Donald Trump sprung on Canada this week. But even if provincial governments caved to his pressure — not that they would or should — he’d never be able to force American liquor down our throats.

We may not have much recourse against a president so nasty and ridiculous that instead of offering support to his neighbours who lost their homes and communities to wildfires, he picks a fight over the inconvenience of having to breathe the smoke. But we don’t have to swallow his Kool-Aid — or cabernet sauvignon, as the case may be.

Canadians have been showing our resistance to Trump’s tariffs and his trolling about making us the 51st state with our wallets. Flexing our spending power has been an effective tool in defying the whims of an unpredictable and unreasonable tormenter.

So it’s time to redouble our efforts now that Trump has said he’ll slap new 50 per cent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, from bedsheets to video-game consoles.
