Kashmir’s Recruitment Questions Cannot Be Dismissed

The anger among Jammu and Kashmir’s unemployed youth has reached a point where the government can no longer answer questions about recruitment with political dismissals. 

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lately described allegations of corruption in recruitment process as “baseless,” while the BJP has taken the issue to the streets. 

The central question, however, lies beyond party politics: was merit followed in recent recruitment, or did influence enter the process?

That question calls for an impartial investigation. 

A probe would give the government a chance to establish the integrity of its recruitment system and give applicants a credible account of what happened. 

If the allegations prove false, the findings can settle the dispute. But if investigators uncover wrongdoing, those responsible can face the law. 

A government confident about its process should welcome such scrutiny rather than treat questions as an attack on its authority.
