100 years of Canadian music creation — honouring the past, defining the future

This year, the Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) marks a century of service to our country’s music creators and publishers. For 100 years, SOCAN has protected their rights ensuring their work is valued and they are compensated when it is used. It is a legacy that I am deeply proud to continue as CEO.

To celebrate the more than 200,000 songwriters, composers, and publishers we represent, we have declared November 7 Music Creator Day, coinciding with the birthday of Canadian music icon Joni Mitchell. The date pays tribute not only to her extraordinary legacy, but to every Canadian creator whose melodies, stories, and scores imprint themselves on our lives. From the songwriter whose lyrics ignite a stadium, to the composer behind your child’s favourite TV show theme, Canadian music shapes who we are, and defines how we are seen around the world.

As Canadians we understand this intuitively. A recent survey conducted by Pollara for SOCAN found that 81 per cent of Canadians believe supporting local music creators is vital to ensuring our culture thrives for future generations, and 77 per cent say local music helps define Canadian........
